Green Roof Flat Roof

Welcome to Permaroof UK Living Roofs

Green Roofs Explained, from Permaroof UK LTD.

Permaroof UK LTD is one of the UK’s largest suppliers of epdm roofs. A flat roof system
that is perfect for a green roof system. This document has been put together so we
can explain all the benefits and answer the most common question,
‘What exactly is a green roof system?’

We specialize in supplying and installing green roofs on properties of all sizes, from
sheds and small residential properties to large commercial units.

We are passionate about green roofs, as they deliver so many aesthetic and
environmental benefits. The addition of a green roof can aesthetically enhance a living
space whilst helping to protect the environment for everyone.

Our extensive knowledge in both roofing and green roof development enables us to provide
a full green roof service from consultative advice and design in the early stages of
planning through to full roof construction, planting and supplying ongoing maintenance
contracts if required. We invite enquiries from developers, architects and contractors
and always aim to offer a highly competitive service.

If you prefer, we also supply green roof kits as a diy pack, which enable you to install
your very own green roof on your shed, garage, home extension etc.

At Permaroof UK, we aim to be friendly, informed and adaptable, whilst always ensuring
we distribute high quality, well rooted plants which deliver a beautiful mix of texture
and colour at very competitive rates.

Green Roofs Explained

Basically there are 2 main types of green roof system.

The first one we will explain is Extensive Living Roof.

Extensive green roofs are constructed using low maintenance plants called sedums and
are primarily used for their numerous ecological benefits and aesthetic appearance.
They are not designed to be accessible except for maintenance.

Sedums are low growing, drought tolerant plants that adapt readily for life at root level.
They will thrive in a shallow, free draining growing medium and are wind, drought and
frost resistant.

Our farming process of growing the green roof systems ensures that it is well rooted, with
a careful mix of different sub-species to give a beautiful contrast of colour and texture.
It is this careful planning that results in a green roof that will be beautiful to look at for
many years to come.

An extensive green roof can be supplied in 3 different finishes;

Sedum Sprout Mix

Scattered evenly and softly pressed, this is the most economical way to plant a green
roof; flowers will begin to appear after one growing season.

Sedum Plugs

Planted 15 per square meter, a matting effect will be established after one growing season.

Fully Grown Sedum Matting

The most expensive of the 3 available for flat roofs, a fully cultivated sedum, laid like turf
to obtain an immediate lush finish.

The second system we will explain is the Intensive Living Roof

Intensive roofs are an accessible roof garden that can be used for recreational and
leisure purposes, and works on a similar basis as an extensive system. When designing
an intensive green roof, load bearing should be calculated by a fully qualified
structural engineer.

The landscape variations are practically limitless as it is feasible to create an environment
at roof level similar to that of any typically designed garden. In fact the more intensive
the landscaping, the greater the diversity of options and design. There is little to restrict
the scope for design other than the overall weight of the system and its effect on the cost
of the supporting construction.

An intensive garden does require maintenance and management throughout the year
to ensure the upkeep of the garden and vegetation, much the same as a normal ground
level garden would.

Environmental Benefits

There is increasing concern about the impact our development of the planet is having on
the worldwide environment. For this reason the UK government has actively called for
sustainable development which meets the needs of the present population without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Green roofs offer a number of benefits to the environment over more traditional forms
of roofing and aid the developer in meeting sustainable development needs.

Alleviate Flooding

Following a heavy rainfall a green roof will initially retain more rain than a conventional
roof. This minimizes the initial run off, which can cause localized flooding and put
pressure on the sewage system.

The remaining water then drains off more slowly, allowing more rain to remain in the
natural water cycle and less in the sewage system.

Noise Reduction

The soft layer of sedum blanket growing on a green roof has the effect of absorbing
sound, as opposed to hard conventional roofs which can reflect it. In an already noisy
urban environment this is certainly beneficial.
The same layer improves the buildings sound insulation properties, reducing sound
pollution within the building.

Thermal Insulation

The addition of a green roof layer to a property increases its thermal insulation
properties, making it warmer in winter, cooler in summer and reducing energy costs.

Natural Habitat for Animals and Plants

Green roofs can help compensate for the loss of green surfaces, sacrificed to building
developments. This helps to provide an environment for the development of wildlife,
especially bird, plant and insect life, increasing the biodiversity in our towns and cities.

Improving Building Aesthetics

The clever use of a green roof can help a large building blend into a surrounding green
landscape, minimizing the impact it has on the immediate environment. This also works
at a much smaller scale, softening ugly flat roofs on extensions, garages, sheds etc,
helping them blend more easily into their surrounding environment.

Where a building is located in a more urban landscape, the addition of a green roof can
introduce a very welcome green interlude in a heavily built up area, where green spaces
are few and far between, substituting in some way for the loss of a previous greener
landscape.

Commercial Benefits

Aid to Planning Approval

With the UK Governments stated aims of encouraging sustainable development which
will preserve our environment and natural resources, UK planning departments are
progressively demanding more examples of environmental planning in new development
plans, submitted for planning approval
.

Green Roofs aid planning approval because of their environmental and aesthetic
benefits and for this reason they are becoming increasingly popular for big urban
developments and small domestic developments alike. Green Roofs have been known
to aiding planning consent in greenbelt designated areas.

Aid to Marketing

Green Roofs on any property make that building more appealing. When placed on
urban apartment blocks they enhance the buildings appeal and salability as it is
more appealing to live close to a fresh green space.

When Green Roofs are placed on industrial units they demonstrate a responsibility of
the owner towards protecting and caring about the local environment, improving their
image in the local community.

Individual Benefits

It is no surprise to hear that Green Roofs are very popular with architects and are
often incorporated into their own homes. They recognize that Green Roofs
differentiate buildings from the norm and add an air of individualism.

Increased Recreational Space

Intensive Green Roofs provide the opportunity for increased recreational space
without having to make a commitment to additional land. They can therefore increase
the appeal and value of a property whilst saving significant costs on land investment.

Reduced Renovation Costs

The addition of a green roof will protect the roofs waterproofing layer from all
extreme elements including UV- rays. Hail and extreme temperature differences.
This added protection increases the waterproofing life and reduces the costs of
future renovation work.
